A Flair for the Dramatic

Chloe had a difficult day on Friday.  Nothing horrible happened to her, but everything was horrible.  I personally think she probably hasn't been getting enough sleep.  She is still my little night owl, after all, and getting up so early for school really gets to her by the time Friday rolls around.  I put her to bed early every night and she is still up for at least 2-3 hours after that.  I try.  I really do.

Tiredness + anything = Drama.  At least for Chloe.

She brought her school picture home, and wanted to know why I wasn't buying a package.  Frankly, the picture was awful, and that is why I don't buy the packages ever.  I can do a better job.  So I told her that it wasn't the best picture and that I would take a nicer picture of her.

She broke down sobbing.  "You don't think I'm pretty!  It's a pretty picture of me, and you don't think I look pretty!"  On and on.

And then I left the house to take Bria to her violin rehearsal, and left Joel to deal with the sad pile of Chloe. Apparently, she then fell apart about a completely different issue.  Joel was working on his laptop at the time, so he just typed it all out as she said it because it was so funny.

“Mom said I can’t color, ever again.  That’s why it’s the worst day ever, and all the other days are too.  Every single day is gonna be the worstest day!  [sob, sob, sob]  Because I can’t color.  If I can’t color, I won’t be an artist when I grow up because I can’t color.  I have to practice.  [sob, sob, sob].  Now I’m never going to be happy.  Even on Christmas, even on Halloween….  Why did mom say that?  Sophia gets to color, Bria gets to color, and I DON’T!!  [sob, sob, sob]  I don’t get to color and I won’t be an artist.  Mommy won’t let me color, Bria gets to color and Sophie gets to color – it’s not fair.  I want to be an artist, and now I can’t send pictures to Mrs. Gillis, or mamah and grampa, or my cousins, and I can never send it in the mail.  We never have free time at school – I’ll never be able to color again, ONLY AT SCHOOL. [sob, sob, sob].  She won’t let me color even if I color really good, even with a cast on – she won’t let me color [sob, sob, sob].  I’m mad … I mean … sad.  Now I’m never gonna color.  I want to be an artist – and now, I’ll never be an artist! … I wish she didn’t say that.”

For the record, I never told her any such thing.  I did tell her that she could no longer do art projects in her bedroom because she was making gigantic messes and we needed to keep that downstairs at the table.  Evidently, all she heard was "you can't draw anymore" and then tuned the rest out.

And then, we went to clean the church that evening.  I had just given Chloe and Bria some jobs to do, and I was happily vacuuming, when Chloe turned the corner just bawling.  At first I was worried she was hurt, but she doesn't cry like that when she is physically hurt, only if her feelings are hurt.  I quickly turned off the vacuum and asked her what on earth had happened.

"I touched a dead cricket!  You told me to pick up garbage, so I was, and I touched a dead cricket!!!  And I even saw his FACE!"

She didn't get over that for at least ten minutes, and then we sent her into the chapel to straighten hymnbooks and prayed there were no more dead bugs in there.

Finally, just before family prayers, I reminded them that we had a fun Saturday planned, but we had to make sure to do our jobs in the morning.  Chloe broke down wailing, yet again.

"But I need to sleep in tomorrow!"

Sigh.

She certainly got that right.

I hear all girls are drama laden. Hopefully you can get her to get more sleep, poor thing. The dead bug hysteria was so funny, though.

She's gonna be WAY fun in about 7 years when those hormones hit. :D

AH! Relief! It's not just US! Othere families deal with this too. LOL!

My son is also a night owl and WILL NOT go to sleep, no matter how early I make him go down. It's so frustrating because I know it negatively impacts his performance and attitude. I feel your pain!

Let me know if you come up with any magic.

Reminds me a bit of Zoie. I don't handle her outbursts well. Especially when the day is just fine, but something gets to her, and then she's all of a sudden having a hard day. Or, when she blames me for the way she reacts. "You made me do . . . ". Doesn't work well with me. Maybe we all just need regular naps. :)

I get enough drama here and there with my boys... gulp!

Yeah, I love when they inflate what we say like that! Sheesh :)

I think this is always why I wanted boys. :)

She reminds me of my 3-year-old SON :) He broke down the other night crying because he was "never ever in the whole world, EVER, going to be able to do (whatever it was I was telling him to stop doing so he would go to sleep)" and then once he settled down, it started all over again because "Oh, no! My face is WET!" (Cyring will do that to you, poor thing!) :) So glad to know it's not just ME/US! Thanks for sharing! Time to get my boy some sleep!

Its probably not very nice that I am sitting here laughing out loud, but WOW! Perhaps she has a future in Russia, where she cannot be happy unless she's unhappy! lol Hope she got some rest and you guys were able to have that FUN for Saturday.

Oh my word, I'm laughing OUT LOUD over here! Whoa, Nelly, I've lived this!

Now I get it by text: "I HATE my flute teacher! She thinks I'm an IDIOT! My roommates are all JERKS!! I'll NEVER get married!!"

Send.

At least I had the sense to marry a fed, Lara! TWO musicians for parents?? Let the drama flow...

Oh, man. This is not reassuring with this first girl coming.

Help.

Thanks fo rlettign me kn ow I'm not alone in the world. My family (just younger sibs) tends to give me a little bit of grief over Abby's drama. Wait, just WAIT. I think you probably handle it better than I do.

She knows how she feels, doesn't she? Here's hoping that by tonight she will be happily coloring (and practicing to be an artist).

I love the drama, but am ever so thankful that it is not at my house. At least the only time it is at my house is when I start it, but then again Dylan has been freaking out a lot this past weekend. Maybe it's in the air? Or could it be my 14 year old son is growing up? Give Chloe a love and please please let her draw. She does have some major talent and she is such a smarty. I remember her in nursery and what a great job she did then.

BLESS YOU! I am not alone! It may be that its not us parents but our kids who are crazy! Where does that leave me with a house full of girls? I've written some of this stuff down before and when they get older I might be motivated to share it with their kids(he he). Great Post!

Poor, poor Chloe.
Really, it's so sad.

We have a full-scale drama queen here, too. As well as a whole lot of signs of bi-polar in the other two. What can I say? An artist and a filmmaker? They're doomed from birth.

BUT there's an awesome book called _Learned Optimism_ that will help you offset some of that really horrible teenage angst by immunizing her with some thinking skills to help offset all those doomsday projections.

Oh the poor child. She sounds just like Lael when she's over tired. Dear goodness let the child sleep in for all of your sakes! LOL!

I love that Joel transcribed that whole conversation! She'll love to read that down the line. Sweet, sweet Chloe. For the record: Boys can be dramatic too...Kanoa is exactly like that when he is overtired. Totally loses it.

That was so funny thank you for sharing!
I hope she gets her sleep.

AHAHHAHA!!! OH, the drama....I love it. Sweet Chloe. I can't wait for her to be the artist she dreams of. Her ambition is beautiful!

OMGOSh, that was hilarious! So glad your hubby had the presence of mind to type it out and preserve it for future generations, specifically HER when her daughters are being drama queens and she's pulling her hair out. Ain't karma grand?

I love it! How funny...Kelley gets that way occasionally, but not a lot. Someone said "That's why I always wanted boys..." but I'll tell you what, my boy is just as dramatic, if not MORE so than Kelley....love the post.

LOL!!! I see what you mean about hormones possibly starting as early as age 6. Haha!

wholarmor said...

LOL. I have a seven year old daughter. She can be very dramatic at times! I so understand!

Rachel Sue said...

I am so feeling your pain. My 5 year old is very, very similar. Everything is Armageddon to her. It gets ridiculous after a little while.

This is my little niece. The drama is spectacular. I try so hard not to laugh because she really believes she's heartbroken sometimes but it's just too deliciously fun.

Oh, let me pick myself up off the floor ... bless your husband for typing out that whole monologue ... I think I could put my boy's name in there ... oh, the drama. It is amazing what a lack of sleep can do (kids and grown-ups alike - ask me what I was like this morning at 6 when I had been up with BOTH boys from 12-2:30 in the morning ... not a nice mommy when they woke up again at 6 - okay now I'm just rambling).

Anyhow, I do not enjoy seeing miserable children ... but I relate to the humor in your sharing and I enjoyed it tremendously.

LOL and a giggle too! Sounds like Shellise at times... and I cant' believe I am saying this.. but it sort of kind of sounds like me sometimes too. When I don't get enough rest I can be a little like that too. How fun! Well Enjoy cuz it doesn't really get much better... add hormones onto that in a few years and you will want to just throw up your hands and run away!

cracks me up! sounds so much like lexie--oh, the drama! btw, have you tried melatonin for getting to sleep? totally natural and works like a charm. =)

Helena said...

Oh, man. We've had a major case of the crankies here, too.

I have tears rolling down my face! I could hardly get through this post from laughing so hard...

Kudos to Joel - good idea typing as the ranting begins! What a great way to keep your cool and inserting some humor into the situation.

I'm gonna have to try that one with Laci - oh, how familiar that all sounded!

Amy G. said...

that is so funny...and familiar, except that my drama queen almost always is our little drama king. whoever said girls had all the messy hormones hadn't known jonah :)

Rachel said...

Oh my goodness, I could have written that word-for-word but from my Lily. The drama never ceases around here!
