Maestro in the Snow

Joel has a concert coming up next weekend and has really needed a new headshot. Pretty sad that the one he uses is one I took about 6 years ago! Back when I still used a film SLR. Definitely time for an update.

But, see, I only take pictures in natural light, and where I live there isn't a lot of that indoors no matter how many windows your house has (and mine has quite a few), so we had to tromp outside in the snow.

I must say, the results are nice...although I did have to do some pretty crazy maneuvers to get them! (The picture above was taken while I was hanging off the fence with one hand and obviously wasn't the best way to stay in control of the camera!)

So, anyway, here are the rest of our favorites from his headshot shoot (I love to say that) plus a family shoot I did (also in the snow) for some friends.

My husband is a filmmaker, and he says that you always get the director's point of view from behind the camera in the finished shot -- not just what he SEES, but how he FEELS. That's what I see in this shot. Love. That you adore him.

Chandler said...: Great photos! And ugh, yeah, natural light. I'm at the same latitude you are, and taking photos at this time of year is just impossible! Between the short-short-short days, and the greyness of winter light in general, it's a tall order. And no snow here to brighten things up.

Bria

Bria is 12 years old (!!!) and in her SECOND year of middle school. She is growing up into such a wonderful young woman, even though it's killing me to watch her childhood be left behind. She is enjoying school, unless you're talking about math, but her math tutor is helping her to at least understand why she has to do it. She gets up every morning at 6:00 to practice her violin and is beginning to play some really difficult stuff. She may tell you she hates it, but she loves it. I know this because a mom just knows these things. She doesn't feel that she has outgrown her American Girl Doll and loves her to pieces. She loves to read and has discovered that she really likes the fantasy genre. She is such a good girl who always tries to do what's right, help with her sisters and be a friend to everyone and I'm so thankful that she's my daughter.

Chloe

Chloe is in the fourth grade this year, and absolutely loves school. She is always bursting with things to tell me (consonant clusters! science discoveries! art projects! playground drama!) as soon as she gets off of the bus each day. She is always drawing or creating something and loves to write sweet notes to people about how much she loves them. She has really taken off on the piano, and can spend hours playing each day. She especially likes to compose her own little songs and is quite good at it, too. She loves to read books about cute little puppies or kitties and still plays with her vast collection of Littlest Pet Shops often, but her favorite thing in the entire world are her American Girl Dolls, Rebecca and Chelsea. They are pretty much inseperable. Chloe is always ready with a hug and a kiss and a kind word and is a joy to be around.

Sophia

6 years old and First Grader at last! Sophia is in love with school--everything about it. She loves riding the bus, doing work stations, recess, friends, and reading. Oh, and snack time. Can't forget that. She is such a delightful child, who is constantly telling us all of the hilarious thoughts that are running through her mind. She is so active that I can hardly keep up with her and is our first child to ever be interested in sports. She took up soccer this past summer, and is looking forward to doing it again when the snow melts. She would also love to do Karate, but since that probably won't happen, she finds solace in Super Mario Brothers. Don't let any of that fool you, though. She's also about as girly as any girl comes. She loves make-up, insists on wearing dresses and skirts to school every day, and loves Barbies and American Girl and dressing up. She started violin lessons this year and has masterd her Twinkles already, because she LOVES to practice. Almost as much as she loves Super Mario Brothers. She's such a fun kid who keeps me on my toes every minute!
